Malaysia’s men’s badminton team beats the Philippines 3-0 in the SEA Games quarter-finals, securing a bronze and a semi-final clash with Thailand
MALAYSIA powered into the semi-finals of the 2025 SEA Games men’s team badminton event with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Philippines today.
The win at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University Rangsit Campus, guarantees the national squad at least a bronze medal.
World number 29 Leong Jun Hao delivered the opening point by defeating Jewel Angelo Albo 21-17, 21-18 in 44 minutes.
The scratch pair of Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik then secured the second point with a dominant 21-10, 21-12 win over Solomon Jr Padiz and Julius Villabrille.
Justin Hoh sealed the team’s place in the last four by edging Clarence Villaflor 21-18, 21-19.
The victory sets up a semi-final showdown against hosts Thailand, who also beat Myanmar 3-0.
National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen described the team’s win as a solid all-round performance.
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky praised the players but warned they must raise their intensity.
“Players must give all their energy against the host tomorrow,” he said.
Earlier, the national women’s team also booked their semi-final place for the first time since 2019 after a 3-1 comeback win over Vietnam.
The 2025 SEA Games, held in Bangkok and Chonburi, officially opens on December 9. – Bernama
