LIVERPOOL fear record signing Alexander Isak has suffered a broken leg, according to reports on Monday.
The striker was injured scoring the opening goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham following a sliding challenge from Micky van der Ven.
Isak left the pitch in considerable distress and was unable to celebrate with his teammates. Manager Arne Slot said after the game the injury looked serious.
“If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing,” Slot said, adding it was a gut feeling and not a medical diagnosis.
The club is awaiting scan results to confirm the extent of the damage, which would mean a lengthy period on the sidelines for the 26-year-old Swede.
Isak’s start at Anfield has been disrupted since his British record £125 million move from Newcastle on deadline day.
He has made just 16 appearances and scored three goals, with his season also interrupted earlier by a groin injury.
His potential absence is a major blow for Slot, with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Cody Gakpo is also not ready to return from a muscle injury until early in the new year.
This leaves Hugo Ekitike, who has five goals in his past four games, and the little-used Federico Chiesa as Liverpool’s only senior forwards.
The Reds have climbed to fifth in the Premier League after extending their unbeaten league run to five games.
