Mohamed Salah hints at an Anfield exit after criticising the club and coach Arne Slot, compounding Liverpool’s poor run of form
LEEDS: Mohamed Salah launched a stunning public critique of Liverpool and coach Arne Slot following the team’s latest setback, a 3-3 draw at Leeds United.
The Egyptian forward, left on the bench for the third consecutive game, suggested the club had “thrown me under the bus” to shoulder blame for their slump.
Salah hinted his upcoming appearance against Brighton could be his final game at Anfield before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.
“I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now,” said the 33-year-old.
“I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go to the Africa cup. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”
His outburst compounds a severe downturn for the Premier League champions, who have won just four of their last 15 matches across all competitions.
Liverpool squandered a 2-0 and then a 3-2 lead at Elland Road, a result that leaves them eighth in the table.
Ibrahima Konate’s needless penalty concession allowed Leeds a route back into the game, with Anton Stach quickly equalising.
Despite Dominik Szoboszlai restoring Liverpool’s lead, Ao Tanaka’s stoppage-time equaliser from a corner sealed another disappointing result.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp described Konate’s decision for the penalty as “just unbelievable”.
Slot acknowledged familiar failings, with his team again conceding late and from a set-piece.
The public confrontation with a club legend is an unwelcome distraction for Slot, whose standing with fans has diminished months after winning the league.
Salah, with 250 Liverpool goals, has scored just five times in 19 appearances this season and has faced criticism for his defensive work rate.
His fractured relationship with Slot and the club’s hierarchy now casts major doubt over both their futures heading into 2026. – AFP
