Malaysia assures athletes’ safety amid Thailand-Cambodia border tensions

Chef de Mission says all safety measures are in place for the SEA Games, urging athletes to focus on competition despite regional border clashes.

MALAYSIA’s Chef de Mission for the SEA Games Thailand 2025 has assured the national contingent that their safety is fully protected despite ongoing border tensions between the host nation and Cambodia.

Nurul Huda Abdullah said athletes had been updated on the situation and should remain focused on their mission at the biennial Games.

“So far, they shouldn’t be worried. We will take care of their safety. Their safety is assured and their welfare is assured and we have their best interests at heart,” she said after the Flag Raising Ceremony at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium.

She emphasised that all necessary precautions had been taken, with the contingent coordinating closely with the Malaysian Embassy in Thailand.

Nurul Huda confirmed that 24/7 rapid response channels had been activated as part of contingency measures.

The media reported that Thailand launched airstrikes into Cambodia on Monday after fighting broke out along their disputed border.

Earlier, contingents from all 11 participating nations took part in the symbolic ceremony marking the official opening of the Games.

The event featured a parade of athletes, the raising of national flags and the playing of national anthems.

Malaysia is targeting 200 medals of any colour, with several sports beginning their competitions this week.
