National taekwondo poomsae trio clinches surprise SEA Games gold

Women’s poomsae team upset hosts Thailand to win gold at the 2025 SEA Games, delivering the squad’s first victory in Bangkok.

THE national taekwondo squad clinched their first gold medal of the Thailand SEA Games 2025 today.

The trio of Seah Jing Ying, Wong Zin and Yow Mei Yee dominated the women’s recognised team poomsae event at the Fashion Island shopping mall.

They scored 8.560 points to edge out the Thai team, who collected 8.450 points for silver.

Jing Ying said they did not expect to deliver the squad’s first gold medal, especially competing against the hosts.

“We still focus on ourselves because we don’t want to be interrupted by other things,” she told reporters.

She added that a controversy involving teammates earlier in the day did not affect their focus.

The national squad’s main hopes for gold, Jason Loo Jun Wei and Nur Humaira Abdul Karim, were left disappointed in the recognised mixed pair poomsae.

Judges awarded victory to a Thai pair based on performance aspects, despite both pairs being tied on 8.460 points.

Malaysia protested the decision but did not succeed.
