Penang selects venues for six sports in 2027 SEA Games

Penang has identified venues for six SEA Games sports, including sepak takraw and boxing, backed by a RM15 million state allocation

PENANG has identified several venues for the six sports it will host during the 2027 SEA Games.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Si Zen said the state is fully prepared to be one of the four main host clusters for the Games, scheduled from September 18 to 29, 2027.

He said preparatory work began early, initially for just snooker and billiards, but now includes sepak takraw, judo, boxing, table tennis and floorball.

“We have no issues identifying venues because most of these are indoor sports,” Gooi told reporters after an event here today.

He noted Penang has many suitable venues, including convention centres with complete infrastructure, avoiding the need for new facilities.

The state government has allocated a special provision of RM15 million to ensure smooth organisation and meet required standards.

Gooi added that Penang faces no accommodation constraints, with an adequate network of hotels to house athletes and officials.

“We are also studying Thailand’s experience in hosting the SEA Games as a reference to refine operational and venue management,” he said.

The state is working closely with national sports associations to ensure each sport meets hosting standards.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced yesterday that Malaysia will host the SEA Games across four clusters: Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.

The event will feature 38 sports.

The 14th ASEAN Para Games are scheduled for October 17 to 23, 2027, in Kuala Lumpur, featuring 18 sports. – Bernama
