UPSR and PT3 reinstatement under comprehensive review

Education Ministry to conduct thorough review of UPSR and PT3 exams, considering stakeholder input before any decision on reinstatement.

SERDANG: The government’s review of the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations will be comprehensive and carefully considered.

Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the process will involve various stakeholders and will not be rushed.

He stated the review follows requests from parents, teachers and the wider education community regarding the proposed reinstatement of the exams.

“We have not implemented it yet. At this stage, we are only reviewing the proposal, as there are differing views – some want the examinations reinstated, while others feel they are unnecessary,” he told reporters.

He explained that Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek made a prudent decision to review whether reinstatement is needed.

The National Education Advisory Council has yet to determine which parties will be involved in the study.

Mohd Azam expressed hope that involved parties would base recommendations on accurate knowledge of the education system.

This is to ensure students are not treated as ‘laboratory subjects’.

He assured that if the exams are reinstated, their format will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Division and the Malaysian Examinations Board.

The goal is to ensure student assessments are holistic and aligned with current educational needs.

On school safety, he said police work closely with school management and Parent-Teacher Associations.

Regular monitoring through patrols and surveillance is conducted to ensure a safer school environment.

These measures aim to let students focus fully on their studies.
