Singapore car owner faces charges for altering number plate

A Singapore-registered car owner will be charged in Kulai for allegedly covering his vehicle’s number plate while filling up with subsidised RON95 fuel.

KULAI: A Singapore-registered car owner will be charged in court for allegedly altering his vehicle’s number plate. The 63-year-old man was caught in a viral video filling his car with subsidised RON95 petrol in Kulai earlier this month.

Kulai district police chief ACP Tan Seng Lee said the man will be charged at the Kulai Magistrate’s Court. The charge falls under Section 108(3)(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Further investigations into the vehicle owner were conducted, and it was found that the vehicle’s registration number had been altered,” Tan said in a statement.

The penal provision makes it an offence to use a motor vehicle with an altered, covered, or obscured registration number plate. Police received a report about the viral video on January 4.

The one-minute-and-30-second clip showed the owner of a silver Volkswagen Jetta with Singapore plates filling up with RON95. Police confirmed the owner and driver is a permanent resident of Singapore.
