Sports minister urges fans to keep faith in Malaysian football

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari calls for continued fan support as FAM navigates its ongoing governance and disciplinary crisis.

SUNGAI PETANI: Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari has urged fans to maintain their support for Malaysian football despite the ongoing crisis at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

He made the appeal after observing Thaipusam celebrations at the Sri Subramaniya Swami Devasthanam Temple here.

“Football is one of the sports with the most number of fans, so I hope FAM can resolve the crisis properly, orderly and wisely,” he told reporters.

“I hope the fans will continue to have faith in Malaysian football.”

FAM has been embroiled in a crisis since FIFA confirmed last September that the association and seven heritage players violated Article 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

The seven players are Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Manchuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal and Hector Hevel.

The situation escalated last week when all FAM Executive Council members for the 2025-2029 term resigned en masse.

Mohammed Taufiq said he respected the Exco’s decision to resign.

“At the ministry’s level, we hope FAM will make the best decision possible,” he stated.

“I do not wish to say anymore than that.”
