The Works Ministry warns small contractors to execute projects themselves to build skills and competitiveness for potential international work.
KUALA KANGSAR: The Ministry of Works has issued a stern warning to contractors, especially those in classes G1 to G4, not to hand over projects they have been awarded.
KKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim (pic) said companies must implement the work themselves to improve their skills, capabilities and competitiveness.
“I really hope (subcontractors are avoided) and I will ask Zamri Mat Kasim (Perak Public Works director) to look into it later,” he said at a contractor draw ceremony.
Azman stressed the ministry wants to help these contractors improve so they can eventually compete at an international level.
He revealed KKR has an initiative known as Competitiveness and Globalisation to facilitate this ambition.
The ministry aims to bring high-level contractors to bid for international projects annually.
Azman said capacity building for contractors is being pursued through the Public Works Department and the Construction Industry Development Board.
The work draw programme is a key Budget 2026 initiative to accelerate federal road maintenance.
It involves the participation of small Bumiputera contractors in the G1 to G4 categories.
A total of RM32.95 million, covering 89 jobs, has been allocated for Perak State Federal Roads maintenance.
In a related development, Azman said the government approved nearly RM28 million to KKR for Building Information Modelling Laboratories nationwide.
He stated this effort aims to improve the capabilities of local contractors.
“If we succeed in creating a BIM Lab nationwide, I think we will be the first country in the world to make this kind of effort,” he added.
Meanwhile, KKR announced a RM300 million allocation for 2026 under the G1 to G4 Contractor Registration Programme.
The programme involves 758 contracts for road maintenance works across Peninsular Malaysia.
This marks an increase of 112 jobs compared to the previous year’s allocation.
The scope includes pavement maintenance and non-pavement works like improving road safety and aesthetics.
KKR stated contractor performance assessment will be the basis for future job opportunities.
The ministry asserted there is no compromise on quality, cost, completion period and safety.
A total of 1,731 qualified contractors participated in today’s transparent balloting process.
The live online draw was witnessed by all contractors present.
