New teacher recruitment won’t affect reserve candidates, says MOE

The recruitment of 20,000 contract teachers will not impact reserve teacher candidates, with opportunities still available for placement in schools.

SEREMBAN: The recruitment of 20,000 contract teachers will not affect the opportunities of existing reserve teacher candidates, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has confirmed.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh (pic) said the ministry had discussed mobilising qualified reserve candidates with the Education Service Commission (SPP). He urged those who had been interviewed but placed on the reserve list not to worry.

“Reserve candidates have a bright opportunity, and it depends on the situation … perhaps they will be placed in either primary, secondary schools and different options,” he told reporters.

He was responding to concerns from some candidates regarding the new recruitment drive scheduled to begin mid-year.

Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad had earlier stated applications for the 20,000 DG9-grade contract teachers will open from March 2 to 20.

This mass recruitment is part of initial preparations for the Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) 2026-2035. It also supports the voluntary enrolment of six-year-olds into Year One next year.

Wong added the new recruitment will focus on primary schools to accommodate the double cohort of Year One students.

Earlier, Wong handed over interactive smartboards to 45 Tamil primary schools in Negeri Sembilan.

The RM540,000 initiative, undertaken through the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA), aims to create a more interactive learning system.
