MMEA enhances maritime security with new complexes, ships, and aircraft, integrating AI and extending asset lifespans to safeguard sovereignty
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is prioritising the development of maritime zone complexes to strengthen its operational infrastructure.
These complexes are located at strategic frontline locations including Semporna, Kudat, Labuan, Miri, and Tok Bali.
Deputy director-general (Logistics) Vice-Admiral Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim said the facilities function as comprehensive operations centres with advanced equipment.
They ensure personnel can perform duties efficiently and are equipped for swift incident response.
“These facilities are also equipped with operations control centres, logistical and technical support that allows swift response to any incidents at sea,” he said on Bernama TV.
This includes enabling faster search and rescue operations across the country’s waters.
The agency’s infrastructure push is supported by a RM2.29 billion allocation under Budget 2026.
The funds are earmarked for strategic asset procurement, infrastructure development, and adopting modern technology.
On the asset front, the MMEA is procuring new Multi-Purpose Mission Ships and Maritime Surveillance Aircraft for delivery by the end of next year. It is also expecting four AW189 helicopters, with the first arriving in July.
Saiful Lizan said these high-tech assets will allow for longer-duration and longer-range operations.
The agency is also integrating modern technology like AI, data analytics, and integrated monitoring systems for real-time information.
For existing assets, a structured maintenance programme is underway under the Ship Life Extension Programme.
“Through the replacement of the main equipment and system updates, the lifespan of ships can be extended by an extra 10 to 15 years,” he explained.
The agency reported significant operational achievements last year. It saved 1,765 lives and protected RM1.8 billion worth of property, while seizures from inspections totalled RM102.9 million.
The MMEA will celebrate its 21st anniversary on Feb 15 in Miri, Sarawak. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will officiate the event at the Miri Maritime Zone Complex.
