Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia is actively seeking new trade opportunities while maintaining strong ties with both the US and China.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will aggressively explore new trade and market opportunities with other countries while maintaining its strong existing relationships with both the United States and China.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this strategy is guided by national interests and is crucial for creating new jobs and boosting the country’s economic momentum.
He cited recent active engagements with South Africa and Brazil as examples, which have yielded new opportunities including significant oil investments.
“But at the same time, opportunities are wide open with all other countries,” Anwar said during a ‘Meet Anwar’ programme at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology.
He stressed that economic fundamentals must never be ignored amidst dealing with other national issues.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, was responding to questions from students regarding Malaysia’s stance on relations with the US and China.
He stated that Malaysia is currently managing its relations with both global powers well.
“If President Donald Trump comes to discuss and ask about relations with China, I would say that the relationship is very good; they are an important neighbouring country to us,” Anwar explained.
He added that the same principled approach applies if China inquired about relations with America.
“As a trading nation, Malaysia has to depend on and be on friendly terms with the US,” he said.
Anwar emphasised that every policy by the MADANI government prioritises strengthening national unity and economic progress.
The event was also attended by several cabinet ministers and over 1,600 students and staff.
