Wait for IIUM study before deciding on KL mayoral polls, says Nga

Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming urges patience for IIUM’s study on Kuala Lumpur mayoral elections, citing historical precedent and international examples.

SUNGAI SIPUT: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has urged all parties to await a study by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on implementing mayoral elections in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the matter was entrusted to IIUM for a comprehensive assessment by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.

“Let the scholars and experts complete their study first,” Nga told a media conference after a programme here.

He said the report would later be presented to the Cabinet for discussion to determine the best approach.

Nga reminded the public that mayoral elections are not a new concept for Malaysia.

He stated they were held even before the Malaysia-Indonesia Confrontation, noting many have forgotten this national history.

The minister also pointed to examples in neighbouring capitals like Bangkok and Jakarta where mayoral elections are practised.

“In London, Sadiq Khan is a Muslim… but Londoners elected him not because he is a Muslim, but because of his performance,” he said.

Nga emphasised that performance and service delivery are what truly matter in leadership.

His comments follow a statement by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who said IIUM has the capability and credibility to conduct such academic studies.

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh had earlier stated the feasibility study began under the previous administration.
