Penang, Perak continue discussion on water transfer scheme

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will continue discussions on the Sungai Perak Raw Water Transfer Scheme (SPRWTS) project with Perak tomorrow.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the discussion would involve the Penang State Secretary (SUK) and the Perak State Secretary.

“There is a positive development, it has been going on for several years and I had meetings with two menteri besar and two ministers related to (water), and finally we will continue the discussion.

“It is a new development where we will discuss on the supply of treated water rather than raw water,” he said after holding a meeting with Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad here today.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi said the ministry welcomed the positive development regarding the issue of water supply between Penang and Perak.

On the National Water Services Commission’s (SPAN) statement which listed the Mengkuang Dam as one of the seven high-risk dams, Nik Nazmi said the term refers to the water supply security and not the structure of the dam.

“I want to explain that the term ‘high risk’ used by SPAN refers to water supply security and not structural issues of the dam. The dam is in good condition,” he said.

Earlier, Nik Nazmi visited the Mengkuang Dam, Pantai Kerachut and Taman Siakap. – Bernama
