PM term limit bill shows Anwar’s reform commitment

PKR’s Amirudin says PM term limit bill reflects Anwar’s reform pledge, despite falling short of two-thirds majority in parliament.

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed constitutional amendment to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years demonstrates Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PKR’s commitment to reform.

PKR vice president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the move to table the bill was a first for any prime minister or party leader.

He congratulated all 31 PKR MPs for backing the amendment in yesterday’s bloc vote.

The bill failed to secure a two-thirds majority, with 146 MPs in favour, 44 abstaining and 32 absent.

Amirudin stated that the reform process is a collective responsibility at the heart of PKR.

He noted that while the opportunity was missed by just two votes, no MP opposed the 10-year limit in principle.

He added that Perikatan Nasional showed it was not yet willing to prioritise national interests over political ones.

The outcome serves as a reminder for MPs to uphold their core duties for the people and nation.
