Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil calls for courier industry collaboration with police and customs to prevent criminal misuse.
SHAH ALAM: The Association of Malaysian Express Carriers has been urged to work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to address the misuse of courier services for criminal activities including drug trafficking.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated such collaboration would help industry players better understand the issue and take appropriate steps to plug loopholes that criminals may exploit.
He emphasised that courier industry security must remain a top priority as fast delivery services are increasingly being misused by offenders.
Fahmi stressed the need to start from facts and data based on enforcement actions by agencies such as the police Narcotics Crime Investigation Department.
Understanding criminal modus operandi will help identify system weaknesses that the courier sector must address immediately.
The minister made these comments after officiating the National Courier Day 2025 celebration here today.
Fahmi revealed that the call for stronger collaboration was also conveyed by Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.
He urged the association to begin by holding discussions with the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department and Customs for comprehensive understanding.
Courier sorting centres must simultaneously adopt more effective screening methods to prevent criminal abuse of their network.
Fahmi earlier launched the Code of Practice for Postal Services as the first operational standard for the national courier industry.
This code aims to ensure Malaysian courier services remain relevant and credible in the digital era.
The Postal Forum developed the code following extensive industry consultations with approval from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission last year.
Fahmi hopes all courier service providers will integrate this code into their standard operating procedures.
The Postal Forum will assist companies needing time to review and adapt the code to their operations.
Fahmi witnessed a Letter of Collaboration signing between Shopee Mobile Malaysia and local courier partners at the same event.
Shopee will engage more domestic courier companies including GD Express and POS Malaysia for customer deliveries.
This initiative represents the first of its kind in ASEAN under the Courier Network Sharing Framework.
The framework focuses on shared capacity and operational efficiency among local and international players.
Mohd Syahirul Amin Kamarudin from Skynet Worldwide was named Courier Industry Personality 2025 during the event.
SPX Xpress received the MyKurier Award with a four-star rating at the celebration. – Bernama
