The Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024 second reading postponed to allow stakeholder engagement sessions to be completed.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024 is expected to be tabled for its second reading at the next Parliament session.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said ongoing engagement sessions with stakeholders need to be completed first.

“There are many important bills scheduled for tabling in this Parliament session,” he told reporters after officiating the National MADANI Convention: Islamic Spiritual Care 2025.

“While the Federal Territories Mufti Department continues its engagement with stakeholders, we will give way for other bills to proceed first.”

The bill’s debate has been postponed for the fourth time since its first reading in July last year.

It aims to provide for matters relating to the mufti and the determination of Islamic law and doctrine.

The legislation outlines the mufti’s function in assisting and advising the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Islamic law matters.

It also covers procedures for issuing fatwas and giving opinions on Islamic law in court.

The bill details the establishment of several committees chaired by the mufti.

These include the Federal Territories Fatwa Committee and the Falak Syarie Committee.

Also established are the Rukyah Hilal Committee and the Islamic Religious Teaching Supervisory Committee. – Bernama

McKibbin shines with record-breaking win in Hong Kong Open

Tom McKibbin made a dream debut on the Asian Tour, winning the US$2 million Link Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club with a record-breaking performance. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman fired a superb final-round 63 to seal a wire-to-wire victory on 27-under 253 – setting a new tournament low and matching its largest winning margin of seven shots. American Peter Uihlein was runner-up after a 68, while Japan’s Tomoyo Ikemura, South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen and American MJ Maguire shared third, another shot back. The win also earned McKibbin a spot in next year’s Masters and The Open, marking his debut at Augusta and third appearance in golf’s oldest Major.
