Thailand’s Miss Universe director apologises after a viral clash with Miss Mexico sparks global outrage at the 2025 pageant
MISS UNIVERSE 2025 kicked off in Thailand amid controversy after a video of the organising Thailand’s national director, Nawat Itsaragrisil, confronting Miss Universe Mexico, Fatima Bosch, went viral on social media.
In a livestream on November 4, the 60-year-old Thai director criticised Bosch for not posting promotional materials for Thailand.
The situation escalated when Nawat reportedly told Bosch, “If you follow the order from your national director, you’re a dumb head.”
Bosch stood her ground, confronting Nawat about his behaviour, prompting him to summon security.
The other contestants in the room were left in shock. As she left, Bosch told Nawat, “I’m here representing my country and it’s not my fault that you have problems with my organisation.”
To back Bosch in this situation, the other contestants also were seen leaving the room, which sparked worldwide outrage on the public humiliation.
Raul Rocha, president of the Miss Universe Organisation, condemned Nawat’s actions and announced he would limit Nawat’s involvement in events for this year’s competition.
The pageant’s official Instagram account shared Rocha’s statement with the caption, “I will not allow the values of respect and dignity of women to be violated.”
Following the backlash, another video surfaced showing Nawat in tears during a press conference, asking for forgiveness.
He denied calling Bosch a “dumb head,” insisting he used the word “damage” instead.
“I didn’t say ‘dumb head’ even one second. I said ‘damage’. If (Bosch) believed and listened to (her) national director, it’s ‘damage’,” he explained.
However, Nawat later publicly apologised to the contestants on stage, saying, “I think you must understand that the pressure is a lot. I am human. Sometimes I cannot control myself, but I had no intention to harm anyone because I respect all of you. I am so sorry it’s happened.”
“I want to take this opportunity to apologise to the delegates. If anyone was affected or felt uncomfortable, I am truly sorry,” he said as he put his palms together, facing the contestants and bowing to them.
The contestants were seen applauding and smiling, indicating their acceptance of his apology.
Nawat also extended his apology to Miss Universe and the global audience, urging followers to verify facts on the official website.
“I saw so many messages, including things I didn’t say. Please check everything on our website and continue posting there,” he added.
