Recycling used clothes for sustainable community

Nearly 53,000kg of textiles donated in 5 months

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council’s strategic partner for the circular economy has placed 35 clothing recycle bins to help facilitate environmental sustainability among the people of the city.

The bins have been positioned by Life Line Clothing Malaysia Sdn.

Bhd. at nine different points, including Shell petrol stations, shopping malls like Aeon Mall, a TF Value Mart outlet, Mydin Supermarket, residential areas and schools.

The initiative is part of the Local Agenda 21 2025 programme.

It involves efforts to implement actions related to the circular economy, with the theme “Waste to Wealth”, so as to spur the local economy as well as encourage the public to re-recycle waste which could be exchanged (“Trash for Cash”).

City Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah recently officiated at the installation of one such bin at the Shell station along Jalan Hospital.
“From June to October 2025 a total of 52,822 kg of used textiles were recycled with strategic cooperation of various parties, which is an encouraging achievement,” he said.
“The circular economy programme implemented by the council in 2021 initially involved business premises, housing estates, schools, industrial areas and institutions of higher of learning in phases .
“Today the initiative has been extended to operators of Shell petrol stations and it is hoped that other oil companies would follow suit.”
The company is the fifth strategic partner for the programme.

The others are Edsha Solution Sdn Bhd (for e-waste), Biovisma Sdn Bhd (used cooking oil), TetraPak (M) Sdn Bhd (packet drinks) and Thowlee Recycle Sdn Bhd (used tyres).

Zamakhshari stressed that the the council has spent RM30 million for solid waste disposal.

The latest initiative is expected to spur the community to achieve the objective of a having a “Smart and Prosperous City” as per the Perak Sejahtera 2030 vision.

Also present at the event were Life Line Clothing Malaysia CEO Dale Warren, the council’s secretary Ahmad Munir Ishak, councillors and heads of departments.

Lending a glamorous and meaningful touch to the occasion was Mrs Earth Malaysia 2025 Mandy Gondaara.

On hand to receive them were Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd accounts manager (for government departments) Rukiah Rahman, the station’s Petromart manager Bahakhi Mohammad.
