Reddit debates if motorbikes can park in car bays

Netizens discuss whether it’s acceptable for motorbikes to take car parking spaces, with opinions divided online

FINDING a parking spot on a busy day along a congested road can be exhausting. But the frustration peaks when drivers think they’ve found a space, only to discover a motorbike occupying a full car bay.

This scenario sparked a debate on Reddit, with users questioning whether this parking behaviour can be called a “crime.”

Surprisingly, many defended the bikers, arguing that car owners should not look down on them.

“I don’t mind, to be honest, as long as they paid (coupon) for it and parked like that,” one user commented.

He added that many places lack sufficient parking for bikes, and even where designated bike bays exist, they are often located at the far end of the lot. Some locations don’t even provide bike parking at all.

A rider weighed in, saying he had been waiting “several years” for this discussion.

“Honestly, one bike can take up only one car bay, but one car can take up 4-5 bike bays, ok? Tell the drivers to park in their own bay. If they prefer their own convenience, then we will retaliate,” he said.

He emphasised that his larger motorbike is a vehicle too and deserves proper space.

Some car drivers, however, argued that bikers often park in car bays out of “laziness.”

“I see this everywhere, especially in front of convenience stores and mini-marts. They don’t want to walk a few steps to the designated bike parkings. Bike parking is free, but during weekdays car lots require payment. Do they pay?” one Redditor questioned.

Others admitted that they sometimes move the bikes themselves to the sidewalk to reclaim the car parking spots.
