Roti Canai ranked third best bread globally by TasteAtlas

Malaysia’s roti canai secures third place in TasteAtlas Best Breads list, earning global recognition

STREET food culture has evolved beyond local tastes to become part of national identity, crossing borders and gaining international recognition.

Recently, TasteAtlas released its “Best Breads” list, honouring the world’s most beloved bread varieties based on user ratings and culinary expertise.

The latest rankings place Malaysia’s roti canai in third position among the world’s best breads, marking significant global recognition for this local favourite.

What Makes Roti Canai Special
Roti canai is a flatbread prepared using a distinctive technique where the dough is stretched, folded and layered repeatedly.

This process creates thin, crispy outer layers whilst maintaining a soft, fluffy interior.

The bread is traditionally enjoyed with curry or dhal, making it a versatile accompaniment to various dishes.

The flatbread is made from wheat flour, eggs, and ghee, with its crisp edges and soft layers achieved through repeated folding and stretching — a technique brought to Malaysia by Indian migrants.

Current Top Rankings
According to TasteAtlas’s latest rankings, India’s garlic butter naan claimed the top spot, followed by Amritsari kulcha in second place, with roti canai securing third position.

The ranking methodology employs mechanisms to identify authentic users whilst filtering out automated accounts, nationalistic bias, and local favouritism, placing greater value on ratings from users recognised as having culinary knowledge.

Global Recognition
TasteAtlas notes that whilst roti canai is available in Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, the Malaysian flag is presented alongside the listing, recognising Malaysia’s strong association with this beloved bread.

The recognition by TasteAtlas signals that roti canai has not only remained popular within Malaysia but has achieved worldwide acclaim, joining the ranks of internationally celebrated breads.

A Breakfast Staple and Beyond
Known as Malaysia’s top breakfast choice, roti canai is enjoyed throughout the day — for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack at any time.

The bread is commonly sold by street vendors known as mamaks, contributing to Malaysia’s vibrant street food culture.

The TasteAtlas accolade reinforces roti canai’s position as a culinary ambassador for Malaysia, showcasing the nation’s rich food heritage on the global stage.
