Mudir gets stay of prison sentence for teaching without accreditation

Syariah High Court grants mudir stay of prison sentence for teaching Islam without accreditation due to health issues, sets RM3,000 bail

SEREMBAN: The Syariah High Court granted a stay of execution for a religious school principal’s prison sentence for teaching Islam without accreditation.

Judge Zulfikri Yasoa approved the application after hearing defence arguments in the absence of applicant Zahanizam Rohan, 52.

The court ordered the stay to take effect immediately and set bail at RM3,000 with one surety pending Zahanizam’s appeal.

Syariah lawyer Boestaman Ahmad cited his client’s deteriorating health as the reason for the application.

“Zahanizam suffers from a hernia and is scheduled for surgery next month at a Batu Pahat, Johor hospital,” he said.

The lawyer noted his client’s scheduled release in January 2026 but emphasised his significantly worsened health condition.

“His condition requires specialist clinic treatment but he currently only receives care from a general prison clinic,” Boestaman added.

Zahanizam was sentenced to six months imprisonment and fined RM2,000 by the Syariah Lower Court on November 13 last year.

He had pleaded guilty to teaching Islam without accreditation at a madrasah in Kampung Ulu Beting, Kuala Pilah. – Bernama
