Wildlife authorities in Terengganu successfully captured a male elephant that had been roaming villages and damaging property, with plans to relocate the animal.

JERTIH: Officers from the Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) captured a wild elephant in Kampung Pasir Akar, Hulu Besut, after tracking the animal for several days.

The operation was launched following reports from villagers in Kampung Keruak about a male elephant roaming the area and posing a safety threat.

Terengganu Perhilitan director Dennis Ten Choon Yung said the elephant was finally captured at about 9 am after being tracked since Thursday.

He confirmed the elephant, with a footprint size of 40.6 centimetres, is in stable and healthy condition.

Perhilitan officers will continue to monitor the elephant closely before proceeding with its relocation to a safer habitat.

Villagers expressed relief at the capture, citing damage to crops and ongoing safety concerns in the community.

Kampung Pasir Akar resident Zainudin Yusof, 59, reported the elephant entered his compound through the main gate and left through the back gate last night.

“At about 11 pm, I found my back gate broken after being rammed by the elephant,” he said.

Zainudin added that he feels relieved now that Perhilitan has captured the animal, noting his house is located near the capture site.
