Kyiv under massive Russian attack with explosions and fires reported

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv faces massive Russian attack with explosions, drone defences and residential fires, mayor reports multiple casualties.

KYIV: Ukraine’s capital came under massive attack early Friday with explosions heard throughout the city.

Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported air defence forces were actively operating against the assault.

“Air defence forces are operating in Kyiv,” Klitschko posted on Telegram. “A massive enemy attack on the capital.”

Two people were wounded in the eastern Dniprovsky district during the attack.

AFP journalists observed tracer bullets being used against drones and several anti-missile systems deployed across the city.

A fire broke out on the roof of a five-story residential building in Solomyansky district.

Medical assistance requests were reported in both Desnyansky and Shevchenkivsky districts.

Another residential building fire erupted in Podilsky district amid the ongoing assault.

Moscow launched its full-scale offensive against Ukraine in 2022.

Russia has recently escalated attacks on Kyiv, particularly targeting Ukrainian energy facilities and rail systems.

Residential areas have also become frequent targets in the intensified campaign. -AFP
