Malaysia introduces 30% weekday discounts on ETS and ERT trains from April 15 to ease cost-of-living pressures and boost rail usage.
PUTRAJAYA: Commuters will enjoy a 30% discount on selected Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) tickets on weekdays starting Wednesday (April 15), as the government moves to bolster rail usage amid rising fuel costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today that the initiative, launched in collaboration with KTMB, is part of the government’s broader efforts to ease cost-of-living pressures and encourage a shift toward rail transport.
Loke clarified that the discount applies to all Electric Train Service (ETS) routes, as well as the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran (ERT) service along the Johor Bahru Sentral–Tumpat corridor.
The discount will be applicable for travel from Mondays to Thursdays, though it excludes school holidays and public holidays.
“This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to strengthen rail usage through services that are more comfortable, safe, and efficient,” Loke said.
Beyond immediate relief for passengers, the move is aimed at improving mobility and supporting a sustainable public transport ecosystem.
Loke revealed that KTMB currently faces an annual funding gap of approximately RM300 million, highlighting the necessity of continued government intervention to sustain rail operations.
“The priority is service continuity while keeping fares affordable and reasonable for the public,” he added.
To enjoy the savings, passengers must use a promotional code to redeem the discount. Further details will be announced by KTMB between April 15 and April 30, covering travel dates from April 15 to Oct 14.
Loke also clarified that the discount does not apply to ETS Business Class, ERT First Class and Sleeper Class tickets, as well as existing concession fare holders.
