Azalina hopes proposed law ministry becomes reality in 2027

Minister Azalina Othman Said hopes the proposed Ministry of Law can be established next year to manage an expanding legal portfolio more effectively

PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said hopes the proposed Ministry of Law can become a reality next year.

She said this aligns with current needs due to the expanding functions of the Legal Affairs Division following various legal amendments.

“Indeed, BHEUU should become a full ministry so that we view the law as a very important element for the people,” she said at a Legal Aid Department event.

Azalina noted that a dedicated ministry would allow for more effective operation with its own secretary-general and administrative structure.

She added that the expanding scope includes establishing new tribunals and strengthening legal aid services.

These increased tasks necessitate a more structured administrative framework for integrated management.

On August 21, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government was considering establishing a Ministry of Law.

He stated this would ensure a more structured legal ecosystem and enable more meaningful regional engagement.

The proposed ministry aims to strengthen the delivery of legal services to the public in line with today’s legal landscape.
