No more manual correction? Netizens back teachers as school disciplinary powers hit rock bottom

A teacher being investigated after disciplining a Year 4 pupil has reignited arguments online over classroom authority, parenting and student behaviour.

A growing debate over discipline in schools has resurfaced after a Threads post alleged that a teacher is currently under investigation for disciplining a Year 4 pupil who reportedly used obscene language in class.

In the post, user @harithzmnn claimed that his mother, a teacher, is facing a probe following an incident involving a nine-year-old student, though details of the disciplinary action were not disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.

“My mum raised five kids, and all of us got into boarding schools,” he wrote, arguing that firm discipline had been part of his upbringing. He added that modern classrooms are increasingly limiting teachers’ ability to correct student behaviour.

According to him, teachers are now constrained by concerns over complaints and potential legal repercussions, even in cases involving minor disciplinary measures.

“I can’t reveal what my mum did since it’s still under investigation, but this sort of thing is becoming far too common,” he added.

The post quickly triggered discussion online, with opinions divided over the balance between student protection and teacher authority.

Some users expressed frustration over what they see as declining discipline standards.

User @ummimikaeil said teachers are no longer able to exercise basic authority in the classroom, suggesting that parents who want full control over discipline should consider homeschooling.

Others linked the issue to broader concerns about student behaviour and rising cases of bullying, arguing that educators are increasingly restricted in how they manage classrooms.

User @n.wndyy claimed that such disputes are not isolated, suggesting that some parents are more likely to challenge disciplinary actions taken by teachers.

However, not all responses were critical of parents. Some users pointed out that changing expectations around child protection have significantly altered school discipline practices, leaving teachers with fewer enforcement tools than in the past.

A user identifying as a father, @whatthezod, said while he sympathised with teachers, the reduction in disciplinary authority has contributed to a situation where some educators feel disengaged from enforcement altogether.
