Seremban police recorded RM17.6 million in commercial crime losses in five months, with scams and online fraud continuing to hit residents hard.
SEREMBAN: During the first five months of this year, Seremban recorded 611 commercial crime cases, resulting in losses of nearly RM17.6 million, compared with 587 cases and losses totalling RM30.1 million in the corresponding period last year.
Seremban district police chief ACP Mohd Yatim Osman said fraud cases recorded the highest number at 552, with losses of RM15.8 million; followed by 10 criminal breach of trust cases with losses of RM1.8 million; 37 unlicensed moneylending cases with losses of RM4,740; and 12 counterfeit currency cases with losses of RM1,520.
“Fraud cases involve various modus operandi, including online scams, fake umrah packages, and non-existent sales…the public should not be easily deceived, as these syndicates are highly cunning and constantly looking for opportunities, particularly targeting senior citizens and retirees.
“Do not share personal details, including bank account or identity card numbers, with unknown individuals,” he told reporters at his office at the Seremban district police headquarters here today.
Mohd Yatim, 59, assumed duties as the new district police chief today, replacing ACP Azahar Abdul Rahim, who retired upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
He previously served as Chief Assistant Director (Traffic Control) in the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department at Bukit Aman, and brings more than 30 years of experience in the service.
The handover of duties ceremony today was witnessed by Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad, and began with the signing and exchange of documents between the two officers involved.
“I am committed to continuing a policing agenda grounded in integrity and the delivery of the best possible service to the public, including strengthening crime prevention, traffic enforcement and efforts to combat drug abuse,” he said.
