Tropical storm Senyar caused 49 fallen tree incidents and one fatality across multiple states, with Negeri Sembilan recording the worst impact
MELAKA: Tropical storm Senyar has caused 49 cases of fallen trees and one fatality across several states since midnight.
Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad confirmed the death occurred when a motorcyclist hit a fallen tree on Jalan Selandar-Machap.
“Although the death was not directly caused by the storm, the fatal accident occurred after the victim hit a fallen tree which toppled due to the storm’s force,” he said.
The department also reported a structural collapse at the Petron Diesel Jetty in Port Dickson involving eight workers.
Negeri Sembilan recorded the worst impact with 33 fallen tree cases, one slope collapse, one structural collapse, and two flooding incidents.
Other affected areas included Melaka with eight fallen tree cases, Selangor with five, Putrajaya with two, and Perak with one.
Kuala Lumpur, despite being within the storm’s range, did not record any incidents.
Nor Hisham spoke at a press conference after the JBPM Integrity Day Celebration Ceremony in Ayer Keroh.
Although the Senyar storm has weakened, JBPM remains on alert for potential increases in fallen trees and slope collapses due to softened ground from continuous rain.
He advised NGOs providing flood assistance to coordinate with the Disaster Operations Control Centre for safe monitoring.
“We celebrate the role of NGOs and individuals in assisting with evacuation and logistics delivery, but they must inform PKOB and wear safety vests,” he said.
Nor Hisham expressed concern that well-intentioned help could invite additional risks.
The public was also advised to avoid visiting risky areas including recreational bathing locations. – Bernama
