Malaysia airports on alert for unpredictable weather

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd remains vigilant on flight operations amid unpredictable weather, as it welcomes Spring Airlines’ new Shanghai route.

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will remain vigilant and work closely with relevant parties to ensure smooth flight operations during the current unpredictable weather.

Group managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said flight operations at airports under its management have been only minimally affected.

“We are always on guard should anything occur,” he told reporters after attending the welcome ceremony for Spring Airlines’ inaugural Shanghai flight at KLIA Terminal 2.

“Although there have been slight delays due to the prolonged rainy weather, we will continue to ensure operations at KLIA and other airports are smooth.”

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia had warned that rare tropical storm Senyar could bring heavy rain, strong winds, and severe weather conditions affecting flight operations.

Izani expressed confidence that the unpredictable weather would not impact MAHB’s facilities or airports despite recent technical issues.

“God willing, they will not happen again,” he said.

Meanwhile, China’s Spring Airlines Flight 9C6524 marked the official resumption of direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai.

The flight carried nearly 180 passengers from KLIA T2 to Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

According to a joint statement, the route operates daily with a one-way flight time of about five hours and 20 minutes.

On tourism preparations, Izani said MAHB is intensifying efforts for the expected influx of visitors for Visit Malaysia 2026.

“Next Monday, I will have a meeting with all relevant industries on the planning and preparations for VM2026,” he revealed.

“We at MAHB are prepared for VM2026 and are expending much effort to achieve the government’s target of 47 million foreign tourists in 2026.”

He added that KLIA is expected to see passenger volume reach 64 million by the end of 2025, exceeding the initial projection of 62 million passengers.
