Inter Milan go top of Serie A after Genoa win as Napoli lose

Inter Milan lead Serie A after beating Genoa 2-1, capitalising on Napoli’s loss to Udinese and AC Milan’s draw with Sassuolo

INTER MILAN climbed to the Serie A summit on Sunday with a 2-1 away win over Genoa.

The victory sent Inter one point clear after champions Napoli lost 1-0 at Udinese and AC Milan were held 2-2 by Sassuolo.

German defender Yann Bisseck and captain Lautaro Martinez scored in either half to secure the three points for Inter.

Genoa’s Vitinha pulled a goal back in the 68th minute, but Inter held on for a crucial win.

Earlier, Napoli missed the chance to go top as their three-game winning streak ended at Udinese.

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp scored the decisive goal in the 73rd minute for the hosts, with Napoli having two efforts disallowed.

A win would have put Napoli first after AC Milan dropped points earlier in the day.

In Milan, Sassuolo fought back to earn a draw against the Rossoneri at the San Siro.

Ismael Kone gave Sassuolo an early lead before Davide Bartesaghi equalised for Milan after half an hour.

The 19-year-old defender then put Milan ahead after the break with his second Serie A goal.

French forward Armand Lauriente secured a point for Sassuolo with a 77th-minute leveller.

“We played a good match,” AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri said.

“People might think we dropped two points, I think we gained a point that could be important,” he told DAZN.

Allegri added that the team must improve defensively but is on track for its top-four objective.

AC Milan, Inter, Bologna and Napoli will be absent from league action next weekend for the Italian Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. – AFP
