Kangar Municipal Council rolls out RM300,000 CCTV project in Kangar Jaya and Perlis Sentral Terminal, with 24-hour monitoring from a central command centre.
KANGAR: The Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) has launched a pilot closed-circuit television (CCTV) project to enhance public safety and urban security.
The project, funded by a RM300,000 allocation from the Home Affairs Ministry, involves installing nine CCTV units in Kangar Jaya and at the Perlis Sentral Terminal.
MPK president Affendi Rajini Kanth said the cameras are integrated with the Perlis Integrated Command Centre in Jejawi for centralised monitoring.
“The system will function as a one-stop monitoring centre, enabling authorities to track movements and respond swiftly to incidents in the two locations,” he said.
He added the project includes supporting infrastructure like a communications network and public address speakers.
It also features Royal Malaysia Police emergency hotline signage and solar-powered LED streetlights to improve visibility, including in back lanes.
“With improved lighting and CCTV surveillance, the public will feel safer moving around at night,” Affendi said.
He noted that incident recordings can be retained for investigation and reference purposes.
The project is expected to be fully operational by next month following final testing by the end of December.
It will involve 24-hour monitoring by appointed personnel at the integrated command centre.
Affendi added that MPK plans to expand the CCTV programme to other areas in Perlis if the initiative proves effective.
Potential expansion locations include Arau, Padang Besar and Kuala Perlis under the Safe City initiative.
