MMEA officer pleads not guilty to RM3,000 bribe charge in court

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency petty officer denies accepting a RM3,000 bribe in 2022, granted RM2,000 bail by the Sessions Court

KUALA TERENGGANU: A petty officer from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) pleaded not guilty to a corruption charge at the Sessions Court here.

Kamarul Hairie Elias, 47, is accused of accepting a RM3,000 bribe from a company owner three years ago.

The alleged bribe was transferred online from a Maybank account into a Bank Simpanan Nasional account at a bank in Setiu on 6 October 2022.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid proposed bail be set at RM10,000 with one surety.

The accused’s lawyer, Rahamathullah Bharudeen, appealed for a lower amount, citing his client’s responsibility to support many children.

Judge Mohd Azhar Othman allowed bail of RM2,000 with one surety instead.

The court also ordered the accused to surrender his passport and report monthly to the MACC until the case concludes.

The case has been transferred to the Alor Setar Sessions Court in Kedah as most witnesses are located there.
