Penang Muslim League’s Sunat Perdana programme uses heritage trishaws to create a cheerful atmosphere for 40 children undergoing circumcision
GEORGE TOWN: A special trishaw ride delighted children at the Penang Muslim League’s Sunat Perdana programme, blending cultural heritage with a significant rite of passage.
The initiative aimed to help 40 children aged four to seven feel at ease as they prepared for adulthood. Penang Muslim League president Datuk Seri Haja Najmudeen Kader said the trishaws were chosen this year to represent Penang’s heritage.
“With George Town’s status as a world heritage site, we hope this iconic form of transport will continue to be recognised and not forgotten by future generations,” he told reporters.
The programme was officiated by Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Lim Hui Ying. Twelve trishaws took the children on a 200-metre ride along Jalan Kapitan Keling.
After the ride, the children received a special ‘shower’ courtesy of the Fire and Rescue Department. The circumcision ceremony followed at the Penang Muslim League building on Queen Street.
Meanwhile, Lim praised the initiative for creating a cheerful atmosphere to calm the children’s nerves. She said the programme reflected a spirit of togetherness and social concern.
“Programmes like this are also in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen the family institution and ensure that children’s well-being is always safeguarded,” she said.
The Tanjong Member of Parliament expressed hope that such efforts could increase health awareness among people of all backgrounds.
