Beware of Trojan horse within Perikatan Nasional

Sacked Bersatu MP claims internal saboteurs stirring tensions between Bersatu and PAS, risking further breakdown

PETALING JAYA: Sacked Bersatu MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan has alleged the presence of a “Trojan horse” within Perikatan Nasional (PN), claiming certain figures were actively working to fracture the coalition from within.

The Tasek Gelugor MP claimed such individuals were deliberately stoking tensions between Bersatu and PAS, adding that such manoeuvres could undermine efforts to rebuild Malay-Muslim political unity.

Wan Saiful also highlighted moves aimed at pressuring Bersatu and PAS to abandon PN.

“These PKR-leaning Trojan (horsemen) would be delighted if such a split were to happen. They are actively stirring sentiments and provoking Bersatu members to turn against PAS,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

He also alleged that certain groups were manufacturing artificial “red lines” to complicate and strain relations between Bersatu and PAS.

Wan Saiful added that PAS also needed to manage internal voices calling for division or advocating withdrawal from PN.

According to him, unity among Bersatu, PAS and Umno was non-negotiable if genuine political consensus was to be achieved.

“If any one of the three parties is absent from the coalition, then true muafakat has still not been realised,” he said.

He added that Muafakat Nasional (MN) would only succeed if Bersatu, PAS and Umno were brought together under a single coalition, saying ideological compatibility made such an alignment both natural and necessary.

Wan Saiful described Umno Youth’s decision to organise a special convention as a “bold step”, adding that it reflected unease among the party’s grassroots over Umno’s continued participation in a government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“I believe there are many Umno supporters who are actually uncomfortable being part of a government led by PH,” he wrote.

Drawing parallels with Bersatu’s own experience, he said Umno was now facing a situation similar to what Bersatu encountered after the 14th general election when it joined PH.

He claimed ideological differences within PH were stark at the time but deliberately glossed over in public.

“The ideological gap was very clear. Back then, all parties forced themselves to only say positive things about the PH 1.0 government as a way of masking the real problems,” he said in the Facebook post.

Wan Saiful added that Bersatu’s eventual decision to leave PH was not only brave but ultimately the correct one, suggesting Umno could soon face a similar crossroads.

He said a more comfortable and sustainable political alignment would see Umno, Bersatu and PAS standing shoulder to shoulder in the same bloc, adding that the three parties shared strong ideological similarities, particularly on Malay-Muslim interests, conservatism and governance.

According to Wan Saiful, Bersatu had previously agreed in principle to join MN, adding that formal invitations had been extended.

“In fact, Bersatu itself had once agreed to join MN and there was a letter signed by the Umno president and the PAS president inviting Bersatu to be part of MN.”

He said the same spirit of cooperation needed to be revived to form what he described as a “big umbrella” for conservative political parties anchored in a centre-right philosophy, adding that the branding of such a coalition was secondary.

“Call it whatever you want, MN, Big Tent, PN or anything else. What matters most is that the spirit remains the same.”

He expressed hope that efforts to rebuild the agenda would succeed but cautioned against internal voices that could derail unity.
