KUALA LUMPUR: The government today dismissed an allegation that it discriminated against the construction of national type Chinese (SJKC) and Tamil (SJKT) schools.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching said the government had instead allowed land reserved for national schools to be used to build Chinese and Tamil schools.
"An example is the Sekolah Wawasan Putra Heights complex (in Subang, Selangor). Initially, a national school was built there, but now it has been handed over for use by SJKC Sungai Long.
"It was the same in the case of the construction of the third Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Mahkota. However, in view of the SJKT need, the SJKT Bandar Mahkota was built instead," she said when replying to a supplementary question from M. Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) in the Dewan Rakyat.
Replying to the original question, from Datuk Madius Tangau (BN-Tuaran), who had wanted to know of other allocations for construction of schools, Yap said there were several initiatives, among them the boards of governors at SJKC which raised funds on their own. – Bernama
