PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today received contributions amounting to RM10 million for the Tabung Ihsan Pemulihan Masjid Banjir Kelantan to restore mosques and surau damaged by floods in the east coast state last December.
The ceremony was held at the Perdana Putra building, here, with several cabinet ministers including Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed also present.
The cheques for the contributions were handed Najib by representatives of the donors which included Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, Bank Rakyat, Felcra Bhd and Special Committee to Promote Understanding and Harmony Among Religious Adherents under the National Unity and Integration Department.
The fund's chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said the setting up of the fund on Jan 20, this year, was initiated by the Kelantan Umno religious bureau and it was being monitored by the Committee of Trustees to ensure transparent distribution of the aid.
He said the recent floods in Kelantan, regarded as the worst ever, had badly damaged 83 mosques and 242 surau.
"It is estimated that RM20 million is needed for the repair works and to replace damage items like carpets," he added. – Bernama
