Sg Teluk Kumbar flood mitigation tender to open soon

GEORGE TOWN: A tender for a RM3million flood mitigation project at Sungai Teluk Kumbar is expected to be called sometime next year.
Penang Local Government, Flood Mitigation and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said a consultant has been appointed to design the system for the project which includes upgrading the pump house there.
He said flooding happened at the area as the houses there were lower than the river surface and so a more efficient pump system was needed to pump the water away.
"It is an area where we recognise the problem," he said when asked about flash floods in the area on Sunday evening in a press conference today.
A total of 11 households in Teluk Kumbar had to be evacuated to the Dewan Teluk Kumbar after rising waters due to heavy rain lashed the island.
Postings on social media indicated flash floods also happened at Bayan Lepas, Sungai Ara, Relau and Balik Pulau during the 90 minute downpour which started about 7.30pm.
Cars at the Pesta site were left half-submerged in water while pictures of the Penang International Airport arrival hall road inundated with water has spread widely.
