GEORGE TOWN: The first direct Penang-Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam flight was launched today by AirAsia.
Its chief executive officer, Aireen Omar, said AirAsia is the only airline to provide such a service which she said was a remarkable feat.
She added that this is the sixth international route from Penang International Airport and AirAsia looks forward to strengthening this hub even further.
"We are currently seeking to provide a direct route from Penang to Hong Kong to expand our international flights," she said.
"We have also recently added direct flights from Yangon, Myanmar into Penang which will commence in March and we hope that these routes will promote more travel and trade between these two Asean cities," she said.
"We have carried about 15 million passengers since 2010 in and out of Penang and we have a market share of about 60% in Malaysia," Aireen added.
Apart from offering low fares and marketing Penang to the world, AirAsia has also installed a full service facility at the Penang International Airport which includes auto bag drop machines to provide convenience to passengers.
Also present at the event was Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Earlier, guests on the inaugural flight from Ho Chi Minh City were given a warm welcome by Lim.
Lim hoped more tourists will get to enjoy the convenient connection between the two cities.
