BMF donates RM1m to 39 charitable organisations

JOHOR BARU: The Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF) donated a total of RM1 million to 39 charitable organisations today in its mission to support and provide aid to these deserving bodies.
BMF chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan, who was present at the event held at the Berjaya Waterfront Resort here, said he was glad that "we are able to assist these 39 charitable organisations in achieving their noble objectives".
He also alluded to the fact that times were difficult, especially for charitable organisations to sustain themselves.
"I hope this financial support will help make a positive difference in building a more caring and supportive Malaysian society," added Tan, who is also the founder of Berjaya Corporation Berhad.
The Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, who personally selected the list of 39 organisations, was present to hand over the cheques.
Among the organisations selected was the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Society of Johor Baru which received RM470,000 for their various community projects.
The Generasiku Sayang Negri Selangor organisation, which received RM50,000, and the Malaysian Sikh Union (Johor branch), which received RM35,000, were among the other charitable organisations.
MRC Johor deputy chairman Velasamy Pillai said they are pleased that foundations like BMF are supporting these organisations.
"Organisations and charitable bodies need income like this to sustain themselves. What BMF is doing is encouraging these organisations to carry on their good work.
"The only way to encourage passion for these bodies to do their work is through these funds. When they do not have to worry about funds, they then can serve better," he said
Velasamy said the donation to MRC Johor branch, would be channelled by them to other deserving NGOs who need assistance.
"This money is not being used for us, it will be used to help other NGOs as well," he said.
Since 2013, Tan has donated a total of RM3.2 million to more than 50 charitable organisations.
BMF also supports various community and charitable causes which include educational programmes, medical and health causes and humanitarian aid.
CORRECTION: We wish to clarify that The Better Malaysia Foundation chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan had contributed more than RM84 million to more than 300 charitable organisations nationwide in the last 5 years through the Berjaya Founder’s Day event alone. The RM3.2 million mentioned in the story was only referring to TSVT’s contributions to the Johor Royalty for charitable organisations based in Johor.
