Police detain 27 illegal immigrants in Northeast district

GEORGE TOWN: Police picked up 27 illegal immigrants during an operation in Northeast district here yesterday.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said that the operation, codenamed Ops Pati, began about 10pm and ended a few hours later.
He said checks were carried out at Jalan Kuantan, Tanjung Tokong and along Jalan Penang which saw 157 from various nationalities being checked.
He said those detained comprised of an Indonesian woman, three Nepalese, four Bangladeshis, and 19 Myanmar nationalities aged between 18 and 46.
"They have violated their social passes and also overstayed in the country," he said.
All detained will be investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
