PETALING JAYA: The most effective way to eradicate the culture of corruption in Malaysia is to teach preschoolers to reject graft, said former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In his latest blog post today, the veteran statesman said this was necessary because existing anti-corruption laws would not be able to effectively curb corruption if the practice is deep rooted in culture.
Mahathir said leaders should pave the way forward in promoting an anti-corruption culture by their own exemplary attitude.
"It is true that corruption is everywhere. However, it could greatly be reduced if the culture or the people despise and reject corruption.
"Moreover, leaders must ensure educators emphasise this in teaching students from the kindergarten level upwards.
Mahathir said the practice of giving gifts, such as money and rice to voters which he alleged was prevalent in previous by-elections, would be considered as accepting a bribe.
He added election victories achieved in such a "non-halal" manner could not be considered as a true victory.
"Just like how a stolen item is not halal to be used or eaten, the same goes to a victory that is not halal," he said.
