KUALA LUMPUR: Many National Day revellers present at Dataran Merdeka seemed to turn a blind eye to warnings and climbed railings, hoardings and structures just to get a better view of celebrations.
The presence of security personnel to control the situation was failed by the sheer size of the crowd.
"It is good to show patriotism and effort to join the celebration here, but safety is important.
"It is too risky. Police will continue to caution them," said police officer, Mohd Asrul, who was on duty near the Klang river behind Sultan Abdul Samad Building here.
Men, women and children alike were seen climbing a make shift tank close to the Klang river, while some climbed up safety blockades and hoardings, ignoring warnings from police and security officers.
Thousands of people joined the nation's leaders at Dataran Merdeka to witness the parade, entertainment and fun, which began at 8am.
The city was still abuzz with sounds of vuvuzelas, honks, whistles and people cheering 'Merdeka' along Jalan Raja and Tun Perak for over an hour after the whole event ended at about 11am.
The roads were opened for traffic as the crowd slowly dispersed.
