KANDY (Sri Lanka): Moulding a generation of Islamic intellectuals will help restore the glory of Islamic Civilisation, said the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail (pix).

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, who is also President of the Perlis Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs), said this could be achieved because Islam was a religion of civilisation.

"Muslims of yesteryear proved their prowess in building a great civilisation with significant discoveries and inventions in various disciplines such as science, medicine and mathematics and excelled in language, literature and philosophy," he said when addressing Malaysian students pursuing Islamic Studies in Sri Lanka here Friday night.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, who is also Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), said Muslims should assimilate research and innovation into their daily life as the basis to moulding a world civilisation because Islam never rejected progress.

At the event, the Raja Muda handed over a MAIPs contribution of RM500 to each of the 12 Malaysian students pursuing Syariah and Quranic Studies at the Madrasah Darul Uloom Al-Hashimmiyah and Madrasah Darul Uloom Al-Hassaniyah in Kandy.

Malaysia's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah, and UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal were also present at the event. — Bernama
