BUTTERWORTH: Only two pupils enrolled for Year One at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kuang Yu today.
SJKC Kuang Yu's headmistress Goh Goit Choo said last year four pupils had enrolled in Year One, adding that in 2014, enrolment was zero.
She told theSun that the school currently has 21 pupils in total from Year One to Six.
Goh said the school had made efforts to woo more students by giving out bags and stationary as presents during Children's Day.
"However, it is hard because many young parents here have been moving to town or other cities for their career.
"I hope there will be some new development, leading to more job opportunities in this area, which will help increase enrolment for our school," she said.
Meanwhile, SJKC Aik Keow in Penaga, which had zero enrolment last year had eight pupils enrolling in Year One.
Its headmistress Yap Wai Kwan said five Malay pupils and three Chinese pupils had enrolled in Year One.
Expressing relief with the enrolment, she said the school needs to work harder to attract more students.
"In order to attract more pupils to study here, our school have organised events, including Graduation Day, Children's Day and Orientation Day," she said.
SJKC Aik Keow currently has a total of 43 pupils from Year One to Six.
