GEORGE TOWN: Gift shops are reporting brisk sales of rooster decorations as people look set to usher in the Year of the Rooster.
Gift shop worker LZ Ngoi told theSun some of the best selling items were wisdom pouches, plush toys, mini lanterns and knot charms all decorated with the rooster motif.
She said people bought them as fast as they could stock the items and have since sold out their stock.
She added another best-selling item was the red packet with the Maneki Cat (charm to bring in good luck and fortune) motif.
"We have to restock our red packets four times," she said when met at the shop at a shopping mall in Gurney Drive here.
theSun was also told other items were popular with those who were observing "restrictions" on rooster items due to their zodiac signs.
"Instead of products with the rooster, they opt to buy the 'Cai Shen' (God of Wealth), Maneki Cats, fish and gold ingots," she added.
Another gift shop also experienced brisk sales of spring festival scrolls to mark the Chinese New Year.
Joyce Loh said words of blessing and good fortune would be written on the scrolls which will be hung on doors and walls to bring in good luck and prosperity.
"The scrolls are very popular as well as red packets with the Hello Kitty design," she added.
