IPOH: A senior Perak Immigration Department officer and three other men were released by the magistrate court today following the expiry of their remand order.
In releasing the four suspects, magistrate Suhaima Mohd Noor rejected the application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to extend their remand period.
The 57-year-old officer, two businessmen aged 30 and a 26-year-old mechanic were arrested on Feb 23 and remanded for five days.
They are alleged to have received bribes from entertainment outlets and massage parlours.
During remand proceedings today, defence counsel Ranjit Singh Sandhu said there was no reason to detain his clients further, as their mobile phones had been handed over to the forensic team.
"MACC is free to call my clients again to facilitate investigation and there is no reason to detain them further," he added.
MACC deputy public prosecutor Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin said investigators faced difficulties in unlocking the mobile phones and the suspects had refused to cooperate.
