KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman seized a whopping RM50 million worth of Erimin 5 pills in its biggest drug bust in the first three months of this year.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the haul which amounted to a total of 2.5 million pills, were seized at Port Klang as they were being smuggled in from Taiwan.
"'This is a unique case as the perpetrators tried to conceal these drugs in 15 sofas and five tables that were brought in from Taiwan in a shipping container," said Mohd Mokhtar at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
He revealed that ten local men aged between 31 and 57-years-old were arrested following raids by the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) in and around Selangor and the city on March 8.
"These drugs were supposed to be for markets in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. This is the biggest Erimin 5 drug bust for this year," he said.
Mohd Mokhtar added that the arrests were made under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
He added that police also seized some RM900,000 in various foreign currencies.
"We also seized several cars belonging to the syndicate," he said.
Prior to this drug bust, police have arrested a total of 34,147 people in connection with drug related offences from Jan 1 to March 2 and seized drugs amounting to RM28 million.
