KUALA LUMPUR: The 31-year-old son of a businessman with a Tan Sri title, who was held over alleged corruption involving the Department of Irrigation and Drainage's (DID) RM13 million government contract, was detained just hours after his father's arrest on Wednesday.
The son was arrested to assist in the investigations on his 63-year-old father who is a former MIC vice-president.
Yesterday, both father and son, together with a former DID director of a special project unit, and the department's current staff – a site engineer, a district engineer and an assistant engineer, all aged between 33 and 62, were produced at the Putrajaya magistrate's court where they were remanded for six days for further investigations.
The suspects were arrested by the MACC over an alleged fraudulent claim of RM13 million for the supply of 358 geotubes meant for dredging and excavation work involving river restoration projects.
However, only 89 geotubes worth RM4 million were supplied to the DID by the Tan Sri's company.
Sources said the ex-DID director and the engineers were allegedly working with the Tan Sri.
The businessman and the son were detained in Johor while the rest were held in Malacca and Seremban.
